LyfeLabz is a standards-driven middle school science learning platform. Anyone can read the science lessons for free, with no account. Teachers and students can also sign in with Google to use classroom features such as class rosters, assignments, and quiz results.
This policy explains what information LyfeLabz handles, why, and the choices you have. It is written to be understandable to teachers, families, and school administrators. Where a legal or business detail has not yet been finalized, this page shows a clearly marked placeholder rather than guessing.
- The public science lessons need no account and no personal information.
- Signing in uses Google Sign-In. LyfeLabz receives your name, email address, and Google account identifier to create your LyfeLabz identity.
- Teachers may connect Google Classroom to import classes and publish assignments. LyfeLabz reads class and roster information and can create one assignment link in Classroom.
- LyfeLabz does not sell your data and does not use it for advertising.
- LyfeLabz never sends grades or scores back into Google Classroom.
- Google login tokens are held only on secure servers and are never exposed to your browser.
Information We Collect
Information you provide directly
When you use classroom features, you may provide:
- Teachers: a display name and a school identifier when requesting teacher access, and any verification information needed to confirm you teach at your school.
- Students: a display name, and a class join code when your teacher's class uses one.
Google account information (Google Sign-In)
Both teachers and students sign in with Google. Through Google Sign-In, LyfeLabz receives basic Google profile information: your name, email address, profile picture, and a Google account identifier. This is used to create and recognize your LyfeLabz account. Your email address is used only to help match you to the correct account and class; it is never placed in lesson or assignment web links.
Google Classroom information (teachers who connect Classroom)
If a teacher chooses to connect Google Classroom, LyfeLabz reads the teacher's list of Classroom classes and, for classes the teacher imports, the class roster. See the Google Classroom section below for the exact permissions and how the data is used.
Class and roster information
To run a class, LyfeLabz stores class details (such as class name, grade, and section), the roster of enrolled students, and each student's enrollment status. For classes imported from Google Classroom, Google Classroom remains the source of truth for the roster and LyfeLabz keeps a mirror that a teacher refreshes.
Assignments and assessment results
When a teacher assigns a lesson and a student completes a quiz, LyfeLabz records the assignment, the student's attempt, and the resulting score. Scores are calculated on the server. Answer keys are confidential and are never shared with students, teachers, or administrators through the app.
Analytics and technical information
The public website uses basic analytics (Google Analytics) to understand overall usage, such as the number of visitors, pages viewed, general region (city level), device and browser type, and referring sites. This information is aggregate and is not used to identify an individual visitor.
Google Classroom Integration and Google User Data
Connecting Google Classroom is optional and is available to teachers only. When a teacher connects, LyfeLabz asks Google for permission (OAuth) using the smallest set of permissions needed for each step. Permissions are requested incrementally: read-only access first, and the ability to create an assignment only when the teacher chooses to publish one.
Permissions LyfeLabz requests and why
| Permission (Google scope) | Why LyfeLabz asks for it | Read or write |
|---|---|---|
classroom.courses.readonly |
List the teacher's own Google Classroom classes so the teacher can choose which to import. | Read only |
classroom.rosters.readonly |
Read the student roster of a class the teacher imports, so LyfeLabz knows who is in the class. | Read only |
classroom.coursework.students |
Requested only when a teacher publishes an assignment. Lets LyfeLabz create one assignment item in the teacher's own class. | Write (create assignment only) |
classroom.topics.readonly |
Requested only when publishing. Reads the class's topic list so an assignment can be filed under a topic the teacher picks. | Read only |
What LyfeLabz does and does not do in Google Classroom
- LyfeLabz reads the teacher's class list and the roster of imported classes.
- When a teacher publishes an assignment, LyfeLabz creates one assignment item in that class containing the assignment title and a single LyfeLabz assignment link. The link does not contain any student, teacher, school, or score information.
- LyfeLabz never posts to the class stream, writes comments or messages, reads other people's Classroom content, or accesses classes the teacher does not own.
- LyfeLabz never sends grades, scores, or completion status back into Google Classroom. Grade passback is not a feature of LyfeLabz.
- Every Google Classroom request is made by LyfeLabz servers using the connecting teacher's permission. Student devices never call Google Classroom directly.
How the connection and login tokens are protected
The access and refresh tokens that authorize LyfeLabz to talk to Google are stored only on secure servers. They are never sent to a web browser, never returned in an app response, and never placed in a web link. LyfeLabz records which permissions were granted and the connection status, not the raw tokens themselves in any place a browser can read.
Disconnecting or revoking access
A teacher can disconnect Google Classroom or revoke LyfeLabz's access at any time from their Google Account permissions. If access is revoked or expires, LyfeLabz marks the connection as disconnected, marks the affected classes as needing reconnection, and prompts the teacher to reconnect. Reconnecting replaces the old permission with a new one.
Student launch from Google Classroom
When a student opens a LyfeLabz assignment from Google Classroom, the link identifies only the assignment. It never carries a student, teacher, school, or score identifier. LyfeLabz confirms the student is signed in, is a member of that class, and is allowed to open that assignment before showing any content.
Google API Services Limited Use Disclosure
LyfeLabz's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. In practice this means:
- LyfeLabz uses Google user data only to provide and improve the classroom features described in this policy.
- LyfeLabz does not transfer or sell Google user data to third parties for advertising, and does not use it for advertising of any kind.
- LyfeLabz does not use Google user data to build advertising profiles or for any purpose unrelated to running the LyfeLabz classroom experience.
- Human access to Google user data is limited to what is required to operate, secure, or support the service, or as required by law.
This disclosure describes how LyfeLabz actually handles Google user data. It does not mean that Google has reviewed, verified, approved, or endorsed LyfeLabz.
How We Use Information
LyfeLabz uses the information above to:
- Create and recognize teacher and student accounts.
- Set up classes and rosters, and place each student in the right class.
- Let teachers assign lessons and let students open and complete them.
- Calculate and show assessment results to the right people (a student sees their own results; a teacher sees their own classes).
- Keep the platform secure and working correctly.
- Understand overall usage of the public website to improve the lessons.
LyfeLabz does not sell, rent, or trade personal information, and does not use it for advertising.
How Information Is Shared
LyfeLabz does not sell personal information and does not share it for advertising. Information is shared only in these limited ways:
- Within a class: a teacher can see the roster and results for their own classes. A student sees only their own work.
- Service providers: LyfeLabz runs on Google Cloud and Firebase, which store and process data on LyfeLabz's behalf to operate the service. Google Analytics processes aggregate website usage. These providers act as processors under their own terms.
- Legal requirements: LyfeLabz may disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety and security of the service and its users.
LyfeLabz keeps each district's and each class's data separated so that people cannot see data outside their own class or district.
Data Retention and Deletion
LyfeLabz retains information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide and operate the service, and for legitimate operational and legal purposes. In practice, class, roster, assignment, and results information is kept while it is needed to serve a teacher and their school. Classes and enrollments are archived rather than immediately erased, so that a student's completed work and history remain accurate.
To ask a question about your information or to request deletion of an account or class data, contact privacy@lyfelabz.com. Because some information is kept for the operational and legal reasons described above, not every item can always be deleted immediately, and requests from a school or district on behalf of their students are handled together with that school or district.
Security
LyfeLabz takes reasonable steps to protect information. Access is controlled so that people can reach only the data for their own class or district. Sensitive items, such as Google login tokens and quiz answer keys, are kept on secure servers and are never exposed to a web browser. Actions that affect accounts and classes are performed by servers, not by trusting the student's or teacher's device.
No online service can promise perfect security, and LyfeLabz does not make that promise. LyfeLabz works to protect information using appropriate safeguards and to respond promptly if a problem is discovered.
Students' Privacy
LyfeLabz is built for classroom use. The public science lessons require no account and collect no personal information from students. Classroom features are intended to be used under the direction of a teacher and school.
Classroom features are meant to be used at the direction of a teacher and school. Teachers and schools are responsible for having the appropriate permission to enroll students, and for following their own policies and applicable laws when they add students to a class and connect Google Classroom.
For students, LyfeLabz handles only the limited information needed to run the class: a display name, the Google account used to sign in, class enrollment, and the student's own assignment and quiz results. LyfeLabz does not build advertising profiles of students and does not use student information for advertising. This policy describes LyfeLabz's actual data practices in plain language; it does not by itself make a legal compliance determination under any specific student-privacy law.
